This Way Up

You've been dreaming about it since you were little.

Learn to fly

The exhilarating sensation of flight.

You've gazed into the sky and watched airplanes whisk their passengers to far away lands. You've read about Lindbergh and The Right Stuff. You've always dreamed of flying. But you thought it would take too much time, or that it was too expensive. Maybe you thought only daredevils became pilots.

It's So Simple

Learn to fly it's simple

Learning to fly is a lot easier than people think. You don't have to become a commercial or military pilot to fly.

You can be part of aviation.

Today there are thousands of people, just like you, learning to fly. They come from all walks of life and have a variety of reasons for wanting to be a pilot. Some fly to expand business opportunities. Others to explore careers in the aviation industry. Some are looking for an activity they can share with their family.

Most fly for the sheer fun of it.

Whatever your reason, there are just a few basic requirements you will have to meet in order to fly solo.

You Must...

Be at least 15.

Speak English.

Be medically fit to hold a drivers licence.

That's all. If you meet these requirements, you can fly. (You can actually fly at any age, but you must be 15 to fly solo with an RAA licence 16 for a CASA licence). You don't have to be Chuck Yeager, just a regular person.

Safety First

Now, let's address the issue of safety.

More so than anything else, safety comes first in aviation. In fact, safety is the foundation of flight training. Today's training aircraft are engineered and built to rigid standards and are constantly checked to make certain they're always airworthy.

Also new technology, like GPS (Global Positioning System), makes navigation safer than ever. Innovations in weather tracking radar and radio communications, make today's aircraft one of the safest vehicles ever invented.

Prepare for Take Off

Once you've made the decision, it's time to begin training.

Pilot training consists of both ground and flight courses which cover flight rules and regulations, flight planning, navigation, radio procedures and weather. In order to receive your certificate, you must pass the written exams (rules and regulations) set by the school and then the fun part -- the flight test.

As a pilot, you choose the level of involvement you want. The more you take on, the more stringent the requirements. From a recreational pilot certificate to a Commercial Airline Pilot.

It's up to you.

Fly Now, Buy Later

The best part is, you don't even have to own an airplane in order to fly.

Instead, you can rent an airplane, much like you would a car, or join a "syndicate" and share ownership.

Costs to obtain a pilot's license vary, depending on the type of licence you require.

Payments for part-time training are at the end of each lesson, usually an hour in the air which makes budgeting easer.

You're In Control

Imagine flying to a nearby country town for breakfast or lunch.

Or taking your friends (or family) on a weekend getaway, traveling at more than twice the speed of a car.

Flying is fun! You decide where you're going, when you want to arrive and when to return. And there are more than 5,300 airports across the country in communities just like yours...just waiting for your arrival!

Getting Off the Ground

Like the philosopher said "A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step" and your first step is to get into an airplane and experience flying for yourself.

Some FAQ's

Why provide two types of licences?

No two people want the same thing from a pilots licence, therefore Air Warrnambool provides flight training in both Recreation Aircraft and General Aviation Aircraft. If you want to learn for fun and fly around the local area or for business and travel across the country, we can determine the licence best for you.

Is a recreation pilot certificate taught at a lower standard than General Aviation?

No, the Recreation Pilot Certificate is taught from and to the same standard as the CASA day VFR syllabus.

Can I start learning in the Recreation Aircraft then change to the General Aviation Aircraft?

Yes, since training is conducted to the same syllabus you can change your mind either way and swap which licence you want to achieve.

Is flying safe?

Yes, we wouldn't be teaching it if it wasn't safe, plus about half of your training is how to handle emergency procedures.

Is learning to fly expensive?

A lot of people think it is until they come into the flying school and ask, they then find out flying is a lot more affordable than they first thought. The average lesson for a recreation pilot certificate is $205 and $265 in General Aviation, most people will do at least one lesson every week to two weeks. Also the average person takes about 32 lessons to achieve the first stage of their licence.

How do I start?

Give us a phone call on 03 5565 9139 or send us an email and book in for a First Flying Lesson. The First Flying Lesson is a half hour flight with an Instructor in a Recreation Aircraft (or you can request a General Aviation Aircraft) for $100

Aircraft used for the Recreation Aviation First First Flying Lesson is an Evektor SportStar

Aircraft used for the General Aviation First Flying Lesson is a Cessna 172
