THE RECREATIONAL PILOT’S LICENCE

What is a Recreational Aircraft?
A recreational aircraft is a fixed wing powered aeroplane that weighs no more than 600kg, fully loaded for take off including the pilot, fuel and passenger (if permitted).

Where can I fly?
Generally, anywhere outside controlled airspace between 500 and 5,000 feet. Under special conditions it is possible to go to 10,000 feet, to enter controlled airspace and use controlled airports. There are, of course, certain rules regarding public safety and nuisance that must be observed.

What other rules are there?
Since RAA aircraft share the sky with other aircraft, you must conform to all the normal rules of the air. These will be taught to you when you train for your Recreational Pilot Certificate. You may undergo further flight training to allow you to fly “conventional” aircraft (CASA controlled) but you will need to pass a more stringent medical standard. top

PILOT CERTIFICATE - RESTRICTED

Everyone learning how to fly begin as Student Pilots after passing a flight test for the issue of the Pilot Certificate you will know the basics of flying and be allowed to fly solo in the Air Warrnambool Training Area.

WHAT TO DO AFTER THE RAA PILOT CERTIFICATE

Many people who have achieved their Pilot Certificate are quite happy flying around in that class of aircraft. Those who do this just hire the aircraft without the Instructor and fly locally or even plan their first big trip into Australia.

Some people want to fly bigger and faster aircraft which can be a simple step up to the CASA Licence.

CASA PILOT’S LICENCES

The CASA Pilot licence allows the holder to fly General Aviation aircraft, typically these aircraft have a Maximum Take-off Weight greater than 600kg and cover a wide range of aircraft from the single engine machines to jet powered aircraft.

The CASA Licence system is split into three main licences, they are as follows:

  • Student Pilot Licence
  • Private Pilot Licence
  • Commercial Pilots Licence

THE STUDENT PILOT LICENCE

All pilots learning how to fly begin as student pilots. The first licence they aim for is called the GFPT or General Flying Progress Test as it is known. The GFPT allows a student pilot to fly within the training area of the airport and carry passenger’s.  It is not a licence to fly from point A to B and so on.

On gaining the “Student Pilot Licence – GFPT” you can now fly the aircraft in the Air Warrnambool Training Area on your own or with passengers. This area extends from Yambuck in the West to Peterborough in the East and Mortlake in the North.

Once you have completed the “Student Pilots Licence – GFPT” you can then conduct training to achieve your “Private Pilots Licence” this then allows you to fly cross-country from place to place. It is recommended that you do spend a bit of time and gain some experience on your own before attempting the Private Pilots Licence. top

PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE

After completing the GFPT part of the Student licence the next step is to gain yourself a Private Pilots Licence. The Private Pilots Licence can be done in two parts or in one full course. Part one is to gain a Private Licence that allows you to fly cross country excluding controlled airspace or controlled airports. Part two allows you to complete training to enable you to fly unrestricted in both controlled and non-controlled airspace and airports.
